INTRO (00:00):

TESSA
Previously on Inn Between…

Inn Between theme plays in the background.

GRAY ONE
You have 24 hours. Either you leave, without Castor, or you die. Final offer.

KNOWLES
There’s no way we can beat a demon. This is a death sentence!

ZARA
We can’t win but… maybe we can break his hold on the town.

CASTOR
You don’t have to stay.

ZARA
I insist.

ROSIE
Well, if you two are staying, I’m certainly not going anywhere!

TODE
It seems to be the right thing to do.

KNOWLES
I have to stay. I’m here to look after you.

ROSIE
Here we go.

Inn Between theme is cut off suddenly. It echoes.

Background sounds of tavern.

Door creaks open.

KNOWLES
I need a drink.

CASTOR
(firmly)
You need to sit down.

KNOWLES
Lucky me, a drink can only help with that.

ROSIE
We all need to sit down. You holding up okay, Tode?

TODE
Under the circumstances. You know, I have never been carried around like this before.

ROSIE
Really? You’re small enough.

TODE
It is an interesting experience.

ROSIE
And… Zara? You doing alright?

ZARA
(strained)
For a… given value of alright. I’m alive.

ROSIE
You can lean on me if you need to. We’re almost there.

Shuffling.

ZARA
(quietly, almost embarrassed)
Thanks.

CASTOR
Knowles, please sit down.

KNOWLES
This isn’t the first time I’ve gotten my bell rung, you know.

CASTOR
It’s the first time a demon did it, I bet. Come on, we’ll get Tessa to bring us something.

KNOWLES
(resigned)
Fine.

Chairs scoot.

ROSIE
Here, Zara. Take a seat.
(slightly strained)
Easy now.

Chairs scoot and creak.

ROSIE
And Tode, is the bench okay? We should keep your leg immobile if we can.

TODE
That will do nicely.

Bench scooting. Soft thud.

KNOWLES
Alright. Sitting was a good idea.
(yawns)

CASTOR
(strict)
Don’t fall asleep. I think you’re concussed.

KNOWLES
Oh, I know I’m concussed. Tode, how’s the leg?

TODE
(brightly)
Quite broken! If I were an animal, I think the wisest course of action would be to find a nice quiet place to lay down and die.

ROSIE
Well, don’t do that.

KNOWLES
And you’re all out of berries.
(tired grunt)

TODE
There will be more tomorrow.

CASTOR
Do you just… manifest them or…?

ZARA
(violent, pained coughing)

ROSIE
Is that blood?

ZARA
(hoarsely)
The funny thing about being more or less immune to fire is it doesn’t stop the internal bleeding from impact.

ROSIE
Oh, here.

Sounds of fabric moving around and chimes of metal clicking together as Rosie shuffles around her bag.

ZARA
What’s this?

ROSIE
A healing potion?

ZARA
Have you had this the whole time?

ROSIE
(awkwardly)
I was saving it….

KNOWLES
Have you none to spare for poor old Castor? Burned up top to toe?

CASTOR
(dismissive)
They’re all superficial burns. I’ll be alright until tomorrow. Go ahead, Zara.

Loud pop as the bottle is uncorked.

TODE
Funny that the one of us uninjured is the one with the capacity to heal.

ROSIE
Uninjured? Did you see my elbow? Look, it…
(sadly)
It’s all scraped up.

Zara, Tode and Castor chuckle.

ROSIE
You know, Castor? That might be the first I’ve heard you laugh.

CASTOR
O-oh. Really?

TODE
How does it feel?

CASTOR
That my patron’s dead and I’m free?
(pause)
It… hasn’t sunk in yet.

ZARA
Kind of a big thing to process.

CASTOR
Yes.
(pause)
(slowly)
I am… mostly relieved? As much because you know the truth as anything. Hiding is… exhausting.
(with dawning realization)
And… I don’t have to hide anymore. From… anyone.

ROSIE
(warmly)
Yeah!

TODE
The air must taste all the sweeter for it.

CASTOR
(sincerely)
It does.

ZARA
(scoff)
I can’t believe we’re alive.

ROSIE
(soft laughter)

CASTOR
(joins in)

Zara and Tode join in the laughter. It increases in intensity.

ROSIE
(through her laughter)
I think my favorite part was the look on the Gray One’s face when you told him no.

CASTOR
Oh gods, I was so scared.

TODE
You didn’t look it!

ZARA
(laughing)
He was so upset!

CASTOR
My favorite part was the look on his face when you ambushed him!

ROSIE
Ooh! Knowles crossbow bolt in his eye?
(awed)
That was good.

KNOWLES
(unhappy huff)

ZARA
It was a good shot!

KNOWLES
(bitterly)
Seems that way, doesn’t it?

ROSIE
It was!

ZARA
We might be excellent.

TODE
(happily)
We are wonderful!

KNOWLES
(humorless, disbelieving laugh)

ZARA
What’s your issue?

KNOWLES
Who’s got an issue?

ROSIE
Why are you in such a bad mood? We lived! Against all odds! We won!

KNOWLES
Yeah, it’s the “against all odds” that worries me!

ZARA
Why?

KNOWLES
How do we know we really beat him?

ROSIE
The corpse was a good indication.

KNOWLES
(matter-of-factly)
The corpse disintegrated.

Pause.

CASTOR
(hesitant, with creeping fear)
What do you mean?

TODE
You think he’s still alive?

KNOWLES
Look.
(beat)
Everything we tried worked. Every spell you threw landed. Every blow hit. We didn’t make any missteps, but he did. We all got injured, but nobody died…
We had maybe a slight chance of one of us surviving. But all of us?

ROSIE
(wary)
What are you saying?

KNOWLES
I’m saying… I’m saying… Gods, I don’t know what I’m saying! My head hurts.

ZARA
You’re saying it was too easy.

KNOWLES
Yes! Yes! That’s what I’m saying! People aren’t that lucky. We’re not that lucky.

CASTOR
Wait… No. You’re not really suggesting that he’s not dead.

KNOWLES
I can’t emphasize enough how hard it is to focus with a concussion.

CASTOR
(irritated)
Knowles!

KNOWLES
(pointedly)
Something is wrong. That’s what I’m saying.
(beat)
He might be alive! Or he might not have been working alone! Or there’s something going on that we didn’t see.

A heavy pause.

TODE
I’m finding this, on top of the broken leg, very difficult to think about.

KNOWLES
You and I are in the same boat there, Tode. Not that I would know what to do about it anyway.

TODE
If it helps, I do not feel the noise, the interference, at all. If the Gray One is alive, he is not close.

ZARA
What if you’re wrong about this?

Stunned pause.

KNOWLES
(appalled)
What if I’m wrong? When have I ever been wrong about odds?

TODE
(calmly)
You are concussed.

KNOWLES
(offended)
I’m not comatose! We shouldn’t have survived that!

ZARA
(disbelieving)
You couldn’t have messed up one time?

KNOWLES
I’ve been wrong about a lot of things! Crakows coming back into style, for example! But nothing that puts the lives of five people at stake!

TODE
What is a crakow?

KNOWLES
It’s a long, long pointy shoe—
(loudly)
That’s not the point! The point is I’m not wrong.

CASTOR
I can’t… I just got free of him! He can’t still be alive!

KNOWLES
Well, something’s wrong!

ROSIE
(despairing)
If he’s not dead, then… why did we even do this?

Steps coming closer. They stop near the adventurers.

FEARIN
(with a British accent)
Uh…
(clears throat)
Eh, excuse me.

Small, awkward pause.

ROSIE
Hi, there.

TODE
Can we help you?

FEARIN
(hesitant, fumbling)
Uh, hi. My name is… Fearin Carrior. Did, uh… Did you all… do something?

ZARA
(cautious)
In a manner of speaking.

FEARIN
Well, it’s just… You aren’t from around here but… as soon as you… got here…
(fumbles)
Well, I feel like I’m… thinking clearly.
(low)
For the first time in a very long time.

KNOWLES
That makes one of us!

FEARIN
See, I saw my neighbor. Right? And…
(small, disbelieving laugh)
I didn’t want to stab him in the eye!

TODE
(awkwardly)
Well, that’s good!

FEARIN
I guess…
(sigh)
What I’m saying is… If that was you, then…
(earnestly)
Thank you.

Steps going away.

Pause.

ROSIE
Okay, fine. There’s that.

TODE
(pleased)
We accomplished what we set out to do, it seems.

CASTOR
(gloomy)
Now we just have to live with it. Live with not knowing if he could come back.

Pause.

ZARA
I know how we can see if the Gray One is dead.

CASTOR
How?

ZARA
You have the energy for one more spell?

CASTOR
(beat)
Because if I can do magic, then… he’s not dead.

ZARA
Exactly.

CASTOR
(inhales)
Okay.
(exhales)

Magical whoosh. It flares up and dies down instantly.

KNOWLES
Oh, my gods.

ROSIE
(urgently)
Castor!

CASTOR
No… No, no, no, no, no! That felt… different.

ZARA
Different how?

CASTOR
(unsure)
I—I don’t know… When it comes from him it’s… terrible. But that… that was something different. That wasn’t from him!

TODE
Well, if it’s not the Gray One, then who?

CASTOR
(terrified)
I… I don’t know.

Background sounds of tavern fade away.

POST-CREDITS (11:27):

TESSA
(humming tunelessly)
Oh, if I could just… reach that top shelf.

Stool being dragged.

Soft thud as Tessa steps unto the stool.

TESSA
Here we go!

Wood breaks.

TESSA
Oh!

A heavy thud.

TESSA
Oof! Oh no…

SADIYAH
(with an American accent)
(deep, gentle voice)
(worried)
Gracious me! Are you alright?

TESSA
The stool broke…

SADIYAH
Let me help you.

TESSA
Carefully, now. Thank you, miss…?

SADIYAH
Oh, my name is Sadiyah.
