INTRO:

(00:01) PREVIOUSLY ON…

TESSA
Previously on Inn Between…

Inn Between theme plays in the background.

KNOWLES
If we’re going to get to the Gem of Fortune first, we’ll have to contend with some challengers.

ADVENTURER
The Gem of Fortune will be ours.

CASTOR
There’s so many of them!

ADVENTURER 2
(sinister laughter)
Nobody’s going to beat us to the Gem!

ROSIE
We have to start eliminating the competition. All of them.

CYBILENE
Oh! Hello, Tode.

TODE
All of them?

Inn Between theme fades.

(01:01) THE FAMILY

Background sounds of a tavern.

CYBILENE
(sincerely)
I can’t say how pleased I am that you’re going towards the Glacial Caverns as well.

TODE
Yes. A lot of people are going after the Gem, aren’t they?

CYBILENE
Yes, it’s quite the quest! Very exciting!

TODE
I’m rather impressed at you going by yourself.

CYBILENE
Oh no, I’ll be meeting some friends soon. We’re all just coming from different directions.

TODE
Ah, good. I was going to say you would be welcome with us.

CYBILENE
I hope you don’t think I can’t take care of myself.

TODE
Well, I’m sure you are a very accomplished wizard but… my friends and I make do.

CYBILENE
(hums)
They seem lovely.

TODE
(warmly)
That they are.

A pause.

TODE
Uh, Cybilene?

CYBILENE
(eagerly)
Yes?

TODE
I wondered if I could ask you some questions about… about family.

CYBILENE
Oh, yes! Certainly. You are… Well, given the circumstances, you are almost certainly Bartholomew. Or…
(softly)
You were.
(normal volume)
What would you like to know about our family?

TODE
Uh, good question! I’m afraid, having never had one that wasn’t wolves, I’m not sure where to start.

CYBILENE
Well, the village that I come from, uh, Touramelle, the one we were moving to when you were… uh, when you were lost.
(joyful)
Almost the whole village is our family, full up with cousins!

TODE
Cousins?

CYBILENE
Yes! Dozens of us! There’s always a little cousin causing a ruckus or an older cousin inventing some new whosit or whatsit.
(chuckle)
Never a dull moment in Touramelle, what with one thing and another!

TODE
(baffled)
What? Never?

CYBILENE
(laughs)
We’re not a quiet bunch!

TODE
I suppose not!

CYBILENE
It’s an awful lot of fun!

TODE
We have… We have no other siblings then?

CYBILENE
Oh, I’m afraid not. Our father never really… recovered from losing Mama. He loved her very much.

TODE
I see.
(a beat)
And what of our father? Is he still…?

CYBILENE
Oh! Oh, yes! Papa is quite old at this point, but he is alive and well!
(off-handedly)
Well, not so well these days.

TODE
Is he ill?

CYBILENE
No… Not precisely. He fell off the roof.

TODE
O—Oh.

CYBILENE
He should be fine in due course.
(exasperated)
If we can convince him to stay in bed for a while.

TODE
What was he doing on the roof?

CYBILENE
Dancing.

TODE
(gasp)
(delightedly)
Dancing?

CYBILENE
We tried to warn him about the loose shingles!

(BOTH laugh.)

CYBILENE
(sigh)
When you come to live with us—

TODE
(high-pitched with panic)
Live with you?

CYBILENE
(losing all her confidence)
Oh, ah… yes. Well… Well, I assumed… Uh… Do you not, uh…?

TODE
I—It wasn’t something I’d considered.

CYBILENE
Oh—Oh! That can all be decided later, I suppose!

TODE
I… I suppose.

CYBILENE
(uncertain)
Surely you would like to visit though?

TODE
Oh! Certainly, yes! I had better, I think.

CYBILENE
Good! I was going to say: Papa will be thrilled to see you! You look—we look – just like mama.

A pause.

CYBILENE
Can I… tell you something?

TODE
Of course.

CYBILENE
(slowly, carefully choosing each word)
I always knew you were alive. When Papa used to talk about you and Mama I… I felt it, deep in my heart, like… some sort of twin sense.

TODE
Really?

CYBILENE
Did you ever, uh… Did you ever feel…?

TODE
No, I’m afraid not.

CYBILENE
(disappointed)
Oh.

TODE
(with awkward cheer)
But, after all, I didn’t know what I was missing, did I?

CYBILENE
(hums)
I suppose not.

A pause.

TODE
(quickly)
I ought to be getting back to my friends.

CYBILENE
Yes, well, you know where to find me!

Chair scraping against wooden floor.

TODE
I’ll likely talk with you tomorrow!

CYBILENE
I’d like that.

TODE
Good. Until then.

CYBILENE
(softly)
Until then.

Heavy foosteps.

KNOWLES
(fading in)
I know giants are a thing up in the mountains.

ROSIE
I mean, sure they are a thing but it’s not like you ever see them.

CASTOR
(snort)
With our luck?

KNOWLES
Good point. We’ll prepare for giants.

Chair scraping against wooden floor.

ROSIE
Hello, Tode! How are things with your sister?

TODE
Fine…
(unconvinced)
Fine.

ZARA
(amused)
Wow. That good?

TODE
I’m sorry?

KNOWLES
Leave him alone.

ZARA
(scoffs)

CASTOR
Must be weird though, to go your whole life without anyone and then… suddenly have a twin sister.

TODE
It is a bit disconcerting. I’m not sure what to do with myself.

ROSIE
I can’t even imagine.

A pause.

TODE
May I ask you all a question?

KNOWLES
Sure.

TODE
You are, each of you, twins. Have you ever heard of something referred to as a… “twin sense”?

ROSIE
Ooh, have you gotten twin questions already?

TODE
Sorry, twin questions?

KNOWLES
(nostalgic)
Ah, twin questions.

ROSIE
“If you’re twins, why don’t you look alike?”

KNOWLES
“Did your parents get you mixed up as babies?”

ZARA
“Which one of you is older?”

CASTOR
“If you’re twins, why don’t you act the same?”

KNOWLES
“Are you identical or fraternal?”

ROSIE
“Can you read each other’s minds?”

CASTOR
“Do you have a secret language?”

ZARA
“If I hit you, will he feel it?”

ROSIE
(loudly)
Oh!

CASTOR
I hate that one!

KNOWLES
(chuckles)
I’d forgotten about that one!

TODE
You’ve all been asked these questions?

ROSIE
I mean, nobody’s ever asked me if my sister and I get mixed up, we… look nothing alike.

CASTOR
I guess no one would ask you if you’re identical then.

ROSIE
(amused)
No, we… actually did get that one!

CASTOR
(bewildered)
Really?

ZARA
People are so stupid.

TODE
But the more… magical questions. Are those true?

ROSIE
Oh, no.

CASTOR
Not really.

KNOWLES
No.

ZARA
(dubious noise)

A pause.

ZARA
(annoyed)
What? Quit staring.

TODE
Zara, if you would share what you know, I would be so grateful. I am… new to all this.

ZARA
(sigh)
I don’t know if it’s a twin thing, okay? It… might be a sorcery thing.

CASTOR
Well, what’s the thing?

ZARA
I can… sort of… tell when Larkin’s in trouble. It’s just a feeling.

ROSIE
You still can? You said you haven’t seen him in years.

ZARA
Yes.

CASTOR
Is Larkin a sorcerer too?

ZARA
(irritated)
Yes! Any other personal questions?

CASTOR
(quickly)
Nope! No! I’m good!

KNOWLES
(suspicious)
Now, wait. Tode, were you getting twin questions from your twin? Because that is unusual.

TODE
Well, it certainly wasn’t phrased as you were phrasing it.

CASTOR
What wasn’t?

TODE
How’d she put it? She said she knew… somehow. She knew I was alive. She could feel it.

ZARA
Could be wishful thinking.

ROSIE
Or it could be real!

TODE
The only thing is… if she could feel it, shouldn’t I have been able to feel it too?

KNOWLES
Maybe you… didn’t know what you were supposed to be feeling. You didn’t know you had a sibling out there.

TODE
Mm.
(despairing)
This was all so much simpler with the wolves. I always knew what they were thinking.

ROSIE
It’s not like you can’t understand what she’s saying, though. You understand every language!

TODE
It’s not a matter of communication. Or… perhaps it is.

CASTOR
What do you mean?

TODE
I’m not altogether sure. It feels as though there is much unspoken between us, but she knows what it is and… I’m none the wiser.

KNOWLES
You don’t know what she expects of you.

TODE
Precisely, yes.

ROSIE
I guess that’s not something other people just ask.

ZARA
Other people?

ROSIE
It’s not too weird for drow, maybe, but for anyone else? It’s a weird thing to ask!

ZARA
(sarcastic)
Yeah, because Tode has a lot of trouble saying weird things!

ROSIE
Is this why you have no friends? You’re just a… walking confrontation?

ZARA
Yeah? Where have you been?

ROSIE
He can’t risk alienating his sister!

ZARA
Sorry, is this coming from you? A drow? Who said it wasn’t too weird to ask for a drow? Who has a twin but doesn’t like talking about your family?
(mockingly)
Speaking from experience?

ROSIE
(wounded)
Yes!

A pause.

KNOWLES
Well… Asked and answered, Zara.

ZARA
(contemptuous)
Look, sometimes you just have to cut people off.

TODE
(distressed)
But I don’t want to.

A pause.

CASTOR
(encouraging but awkward)
Then, don’t. Just… give it time. Go easy. She’s learning too, after all.    You’ll figure it out together.

TODE
It’s hard to be sure of that. Then again, it’s hard to be sure of anything in this situation. Your advice seems most wise. After all, there’s not much that time can’t fix.

ZARA
(disbelieving laugh)

ROSIE
Oh, I don’t know about that.

KNOWLES
(gasp)
(with exaggerated surprise)
Tode! You’ve got them agreeing.

CASTOR
(dryly)
Miraculous.

ZARA
(scoffs)
Whatever.

ROSIE
It was bound to happen sometime. Now, come on, Tode, tell us about Cybilene! I’m so curious!

CASTOR
She seems great!

TODE
Oh! Well, yes. She’s very courteous. A—and she’s a wizard.

ZARA
What Circle?

TODE
The Circle of the Falling Star.

ZARA
That’s an old one.

TODE
Prestigious, is it?

ZARA
Real full of themselves. Usually nice about it, though.

TODE
Nice is apt, she is that. She tells me that she’s living in a village called Touramelle with dozens of our cousins. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen dozens of people, much less dozens of people I’m related to.
(warmly)
But suffice to say, I am much less alone than I thought.

TESSA
Next time, on Inn Between…

TODE
Overall, our luck has been good.

ROSIE
Weird, but good!

KNOWLES
So, what happens when it runs out?

Dear Klara,
Before you panic about what I’m about to say, I want you to know that I’m fine and it was a complete accident, but I have all the help I need taking care—

Pen stops.

TESSA
No, that’s not good.

TESSA
Dear Klara,
The bad news is that I have managed to hobble myself for a bit. The good news is, I finally followed your advice and hired someone to help around the place.

Pen stops.

TESSA
There, that’s better.
(beat)
I think.
