Our heroes become one in purpose. More or less.

TESSA THE INNKEEPER
Previously on Inn Between…
Theme song plays in the background.
LADY IN WAITING
My lady the princess was captured by a dragon.
STERLING
Perhaps this is not a quest to be taken on alone.
FINA
Here’s the cave. But where’s the–
MELTYRE
(Screaming)
Dragon!
Dragon roars.
PRINCESS
Help me! Help!
BETTY
Watch out—
FINA
Betty, no!
Metallic crack and clatter.
STERLING
My sword!
VELUNE
That’s no princess, Sterling! Strike her down!
MELTYRE
(hoarsely)
Guys…she’s dead.
Theme song, fading into sedate tavern sounds. It’s quieter than usual today. Meltyre coughs.
STERLING
Meltyre, can you stop that infernal noise?
MELTYRE
(weakly)
I can’t help it. All that smoke in the cave. My lungs are sensitive.
VELUNE
Take a drink, young man.
FINA
You too, Betty.
BETTY
(grumpy)
Whatever, Fina, I’m fine.
FINA
You nearly died.
BETTY
(more grumpy)
That’s what healing magic is for.
STERLING
Are you still pouting?
BETTY
You stole the kill from me.
STERLING
What does it matter, so long as we completed the quest?
BETTY
You stole the kill with my own axe.
STERLING
My sword was broken!
BETTY
Touch a warrior’s axe without permission.
STERLING
(sarcastic)
I suppose I should have just used my fists?
BETTY
And you didn’t even kill the dragon.
MELTYRE
Betty, the real dragon was the girl, and the girl was the dragon. How many times do I have to explain it?
FINA
Still doesn’t look super great, does it Sterling? Burying an axe in somebody you were supposed to save!
STERLING
Somebody who was a dragon in disguise. Use your head, for Cuthbert’s sake.
VELUNE
(serenely)
The truth is easily revealed to those who seek it. Sterling, thank you for your trust in my judgement.
STERLING
You seem to be the person here most worthy of trust, Friar. Your healing was invaluable.
VELUNE
(pleased)
Oh, well, I’m glad to help.
BETTY
What’s that supposed to mean?
STERLING
I beg your pardon?
FINA
You saying we’re not worthy of trust, fancy pants?
STERLING
I was merely commending Friar Velune for saving Betty’s pos—
FINA
That’s rich, coming from a disgraced paladin.
STERLING
(chair scooting out)
For the last time, I was falsely accused!
VELUNE
Please, peace, my children.
FINA
Yeah, sit down, Paladon’t, I don’t have the energy to cast Silence.
MELTYRE
(muttering)
Didn’t have the energy in the fight, either.
FINA
What’d you say?
MELTYRE
(coughing)
Nothing.
FINA
Oh, excuse me! At least I didn’t blow all my good spells in the first ten seconds of the fight!
BETTY
You pulled your punches.
FINA
I was being tactical! Not like Trigger-Happy Tom over here. Haven’t you ever been in a fight before?
MELTYRE
(still coughing)
I mean, I have now.
No one says anything for a moment while Meltyre’s coughing quiets.
STERLING
You mean to say that that fight was your very first altercation?
MELTYRE
Yeah, pretty much. Definitely the first time I got paid for wizard stuff.
VELUNE
(awestruck)
My word.
FINA
Well, they say your first time’s supposed to be special. Seriously, you never fought anything before?
MELTYRE
I’ve gotten beat up before.
BETTY
You’re lucky.
MELTYRE
Lucky?
BETTY
You got a dragon. I had to fight my cousin.
VELUNE
Did you triumph?
BETTY
I’m alive, aren’t I?
MELTYRE
I wasn’t a big fan of the almost dying part.
FINA
You’ll get used to it.
MELTYRE
Seriously? You do this all the time?
BETTY
It’s a living.
STERLING
It’s a duty.
VELUNE
It’s a privilege.
FINA
(amused)
Listen to you guys, you’re like an army recruitment ad.
(chair scoot)
Well, it’s been fun, but I have to go count all that shiny, shiny gold I just earned, so—
BETTY
We’re breaking the curse.
STERLING
I beg your pardon?
FINA
Betty, no, not this again.
MELTYRE
We were only paid to bring the princess home.
BETTY
You saw her. She’s still all…dragony.
VELUNE
That is true. She can hardly grow up to rule while she’s in that condition.
STERLING
We didn’t exactly finish what we started.
FINA
Hey, nobody asked us to play Prince Charming and reverse curses here.
MELTYRE
And even if someone had—I mean—why should we do it together?
An awkward silence.
VELUNE
Well…I can only speak for myself, of course…but I’ve quite enjoyed our time together.
BETTY
It was a good kill, Sterling.
STERLING
Er. Thank you…You know, it couldn’t hurt to have the king indebted to us.
FINA
Oho, might reverse a certain disgrace, you think?
STERLING
Perhaps. Not a bad idea to be owed a favor.
FINA
Do you suppose I could liquidate that favor into cash?
STERLING
It’s possible.
FINA
(intrigued)
Hmm.
BETTY
Could be tough. We should do it together.
FINA
You know, I’m not opposed. What do you say, pretty boy?
STERLING
I say yes. I want to finish this properly.
VELUNE
Will you join us, Meltyre?
MELTYRE
I mean…
FINA
I don’t know how to break a curse. How ‘bout you, Friar?
VELUNE
Afraid not.
FINA
You, pretty boy?
STERLING
I don’t have the slightest notion.
FINA
We could use you, kid.
MELTYRE
I’ve got obligations elsewhere. I’m not sure I can just run off and—
BETTY
A little girl needs help.
A long pause. Meltyre sighs.
MELTYRE
(reluctantly)
All right. Okay. It’s a transfiguration curse. I have an old master who might be able to help, he’s got books all about these sorts of things.
FINA
Yeah, that’s the spirit! We’re a gang now!
STERLING
Yes. And I vow to protect my gang with my shield and if necessary with my life, for there is no greater honor than to die—
BETTY
Hey, chill.
VELUNE
How lovely. (chair scraping) Who’d like a drink?
MELTYRE
(coughing)
Me. Please.
STERLING
I’m going to need a new sword.
FINA
No worries. I know a guy.
MELTYRE
Compared to a dragon, a library should be easy, right?
Silence, as no one responds.
MELTYRE
Right? Guys?
Theme song.
TESSA THE INNKEEPER
Next time, on Inn Between…
BETTY
Where’s this guy live again?
MELTYRE
The Castle Von Stradula.
VELUNE
The one up the dark mountain pass?
STERLING
That’s constantly surrounded by lightning storms?
MELTYRE
Yeah, that’s the one.
FINA
Great! What could possibly go wrong?

TESSA
Oh yes, by all means, have another bar fight. I’ll just replace the chandelier, shall I? Again.
